Film Handling & Storage

  • Be sure to expose film before the expiration date indicated on the film package and process as promtly as possible after exposure.
  • Films kept under cold storage conditions should be allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 hour or longer before use to come into equilibrium with temperatures before being opened.
  • Sheet films should be handled in total darkness, exercising care not to touch emulsion surfaces. Roll films should be handled in subdued light, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • Films loaded into cameras or film holders should be exposed and processed as promptly as possible.
  • Under certain conditions, especially with high-speed film, the X-ray equipment used to inspect carry-on baggage at airport terminals will cause film fogging. So both exposed and unexposed films should either be removed from baggage for manual inspection or be kept in lead-lined bags.

Film Storage

    Unprocessed Film

        Whether exposed or not, if stored under hot and humid conditions,
        films display greater photographic property variations (e.g.,speed, color balance, and minimum density),
        and are more susceptible to adverse physical effects Formalin vapors and other harmful gases
        can also adversely affect photographic properties. It is recommended, therefore,
        that you follow the procedures/pratices below:

  • FUJICHROME film packs should be kept at temperatures below 15oC(59oF)and FUJICOLOR film packages below 10oc(50oF) if stored for extended periods. Unopened film packages should be kept in polyethylene or vinyl bags.
  • Loaded cameras and film holders should be kept in cool, dry places free from harmful gases. Formalin vapors may escape from adhesive agents used in new building materials, notably plywood, and from new furniture. Film storage near such formalin vapor sources should be aboided


    Processed Film

    Processed films are subject to color fading and discoloration from light
    (especially ultraviolet rays), high temperatures and humidity.
    To avoid the adverse effects of light, heat and moisture, it is recommended that processed films be
    kept in sleeves, envelopes or mounts and stored in dry, cool and dark locations where there is good
    ventilation.

  • Recommended Storage Conditions
    Temperature: below 25oC (77oF)
    Humidity: 30 to 60% RH
  • Extended Duration Conditions
    Temperature: below 10oC(50oF)
    Humidity: 30 to 50% RH
